Cycle 2

Fundamental Learning Cycle

The Fundamental Learning Cycle begins in CP and continues through CE1 and CE2.

The courses of Cycle 2 promote continuity with preschool by organising teachings into major activity areas:

  • French
  • Mathematics
  • Foreign Languages
  • Physical Education and Sports
  • Artistic Education
  • Exploring the World
  • Moral and Civic Education

Learning at school means questioning the world. It also means acquiring specific languages, for which simply growing up doesn’t provide you with. Cycle 2 now covers the period from CP to CE2, providing the duration and coherence necessary for progressive and demanding learning. In Cycle 2, all subjects question the world. Developing and having a good command of languages, especially the French language, is the priority.

Cycle 3

Learning Consolidation Cycle

Cycle 3 includes the classes of CM1, CM2, and Year 6 (AU) Year 7 (NZ), thus covering both elementary and middle (secondary) school.

The areas of learning are structured around:

  • French
  • Mathematics
  • Foreign Languages
  • Physical Education and Sports
  • Art
  • Music Education
  • Art History
  • History and Geography
  • Science and Technology
  • Moral and Civic Education

Cycle 3 now links the last two years of elementary (primary) school with the first year of middle (secondary) school, with an enhanced focus on pedagogical (educational) continuity and the coherence of learning to support the acquisition of the common base of knowledge, skills, and culture. This cycle has a dual responsibility: to consolidate the fundamental learning that was initiated in Cycle 2 and laid the foundation for future learning; and to ensure a smoother transition between primary school and middle school, providing continuity and progression across the three years of the cycle.
