History of the school
40 Years of Service to Students
The French school in Port Vila was established in 1981, just after the independence of this archipelago made up of 83 islands and home to a total of 235,000 inhabitants. This creation was in response to the demand from many parents. Under the leadership of the Headmaster at the time, Mr. Jean-Louis Abbadie, and the parents of students, the primary school that existed during the condominium period was able to continue operating and implement the French curriculum. In 1987, a 6th-grade class and a 5th-grade class were created.
Year after year, the students inaugurated each new grade level, and finally, in 1992, the students of the final year at the Lycée Français of Port Vila were the first to obtain their baccalauréat. Seven students graduated that year, and since then, several hundred graduates have earned their diplomas at our institution. To better accommodate students, the Lycée has continually expanded: new classrooms were built, several computer rooms were created, the preschool was extended into new facilities with a spacious motor skills room, a sports hall, a CDI (Documentation and Information Centre), and the administrative and science classrooms were renovated.
From now on, bilingualism in French and English is at the heart of our educational project. We also promote the learning of other languages, with Spanish and the introduction of Chinese in 2011. More than ever, schooling at the Lycée Français International JMG Le Clezio of Port Vila is synonymous with rigor and quality.
