Visiting Jean Rodet Museum

Immersion in Vanuatu kastom

The classes of Seconde 1 and Seconde 2 had the chance to immerse themselves in Vanuatu kastom during the visit of the museum of Father Jean Rodet.

« Accompanied by our History-Geography teacher Marc Giraud, we went to visit the Father Rodet Museum. Father Rodet is a French Marist missionary who came to Vanuatu in 1962 to share the Christian religion with the inhabitants of the archipelago. Over the years, he has amassed an impressive collection of cultural objects, finding them in the ports, buying them from locals or bartering them. His primary motivation: to keep these kastom objects in the country rather than see them go to Europe or the United States.  He decided to gather them in one place in order to share the wonders of our archipelago with current and future generations. We were able to admire many totem poles, objects from the time of the missionaries in Malekula (desks, silver, stamps…), and thus enjoy the rich past of Vanuatu and its cultural heritage. We thank Father Rodet for his warm welcome.
