School trip to « REEF » for CM1B-CM2B
Tuesday, December 4, we went by bus to the Reef Zoological Park which is near Tamanu Beach. This park allows you to discover the endangered species of Vanuatu.
First, we observed green turtles and Hawksbill. They are threatened because the villagers eat them, their carapace is used to make jewels.
Then we were able to bring baby turtles from 1 to 4 months old from Moso and Tamanu Beach.
The park keeps and protects turtles for 9 months and then they are released into the ocean.
We saw lorikeets. They were blue, green, yellow, orange and black. They eat papayas.
Then we saw coconut crabs in cages. They feed on the coconuts they break with their tongs. They can not swim. They can live up to 60 years. There is less and less because they are eaten and sold at restaurants.
Then we petted the iguanas. The females are dark green, but the males are striped. Their skin is rough.
We could see dogfish. They slept because they are nocturnal animals. They are now few because people have eaten a lot after the cyclone PAM and their habitat has been destroyed. Their role is important because they scatter the seeds. They are frugivorous.
Then we petted the iguanas. The females are dark green, but the males are striped. Their skin is rough.
Then we saw hermit crabs or nakato in Bislama. They are important because they clean the beaches by eating dead leaves. To get them out of their shells, you have to whistle. When nakato grow, they change shells.
We then entered the house of butterflies. They are first caterpillars, then cocoons that turn into butterflies. Butterflies live only a few days (about four days).
We also saw pigeons, a pig, a goat and wild ducks. Their webbed feet are used for swimming.
In the water, we could see moray eels, blue starfish, cucumbers and a sea snake.
After the visit, we had a picnic and then filled in questionnaires. And finally, we drew and played.
It was a very good and beautiful day!
