The “terminales STMG” (Year 12) in Nouméa

The Terminales STMG students spent 8 days of their last holidays on a trip to Nouméa.

A studious stay, which was organized around “orientation” (research on future studies), discovery of the professional world and culture.

Orientation :

– Visit of the “salon de l’étudiant” (career day) organized again this year by the BTS* MUC (Management of Commercial Units ) of the Lapérouse high school. Students were able to obtain information on the secondary studies available in New Caledonia but also in the area. Even Japan was present! The Student’s House answered their questions about aid and scholarships available to each of them;

– Visit of the university library;

– Immersion at Lapérouse High School. Our students were invited to attend classes and meet students from BTS* Accounting Management (CG), International Trade (CI) and Tourism. An opportunity to contact students from a very large structure as the school welcomes more than 1,900 students from year 10 to BTS. They also had their first meal in a school cafeteria!

*BTS = a two-years technical degree obtained after high school

Discovery of the professional world with the visit of several companies working in various areas:

Artypo, a company specializing in offset printing and recently in packaging. Interviewed by Radio Nouvelle Calédonie 1ère, the students were able to express themselves on the interest of this company visit;

La Grande Brasserie de Nouvelle-Calédonie(a brewery) which main activity is the production of beers and soft drinks. A very interesting visit that ended with a small sampling of their (nonalcoholic!) drinks;

Pacific Or, a jewelry creation workshop. Discovery of the repair and creation of jewelry from A to Z in a traditional way or with software and 3D printer for the molds.

Métal Industrie that produces barbed wire, iron for cladding … An exciting visit by the company manager who told us about his difficulties. An interesting illustration and support for the students’ management class.

La Périgourdine du Pacifique, a cannery offering traditional recipes inspired by South West France. We were hoping to taste their specialties…

Culture :

– An exciting and passionate guide made us discover the Tjibaou cultural center. A two-hour visit and discovery of New Caledonian native culture that we would have gladly extended;

– The aquarium, a moment of relaxation in the company of fish.

A well-filled stay that allowed some students to be comforted in their choices of studies while others realized that the choice they had made was not the right one. All of them got to broaden their perspectives and discover new possibilities.
