Ni-Vanuatu Solomon Islanders

Article written by William Sanday, student in terminal STMG

The Solomon Islands is a country that has cultural, linguistic, historical similarities with Vanuatu which explains why some Solomon Islanders live in Vanuatu. The presence of the Melanesian brothers and sisters here has existed since the 19th century. We can expect up to 500 Solomon Islanders who reside in Vanuatu according to the 2009 National census.

Currently, the main reason for this is marriage between people of the two countries. Some decide to marry people from Vanuatu which consequently allows them to reside in the country at will with their spouse.

The other reason is due to working contracts given to Solomon Islanders in Vanuatu. When they first came to Vanuatu, the main reason was for work in the agricultural sector while European settlers were arriving in Vanuatu. However, coming to Vanuatu for this intention has become less common. Nowadays Solomon workers in Vanuatu are often here on contracts either than the agricultural sector. If they are married, they often come and live in Vanuatu with their immediate family.

There are also cases where some come for work and find a spouse over the time spent in Vanuatu

On more reason for Solomon people coming to Vanuatu is for studies at the Emalus Campus of USP. There is a significant number of Solomon students who are enrolled in USP. It would range between 50 and 100 student depending on the enrollment of the university each year as it changes constantly. This exchange of students builds bridges linking the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu through education and therefore offers the students a brighter future.
